The forecast always showed challenging conditions for the last day of the RS Feva World Championships. Sure enough Thursday came, and the weather delivered as forecast with high winds and choppy sea. The race team sent the Gold fleet out but held the Silver fleet back.
Once on the racecourse sailors had 2 very windy races. As expected, some teams relished the conditions and all it threw at them, enjoying the exhilaration of speed and fun while others struggled. With approximately 30 of the 50 teams completing the 2nd race it was decided that it was time to call it a day and with that the 2021 RS Feva World Championships was complete.
Showing their experience, it was the 2019 European Champions FRA 7848 Lisandru Bunel and Thomas Kuntze who continued to add to their very consistent score line with 2 bullets, enough to be victorious and win the 2021 RS Feva World Championships. ITA 7511 Francesco Trucchi and Massimilano Scalzulli left it until the very last race to use their discard posting a 2nd and 20th putting them in 2nd overall while the consistency of LTU 2 Nojus VOLUNGEVIČIUS and Vilius RAČIŪNAS saw the team post a 5th and 4th on their score line and with that awarding them the last spot on the podium in 3rd overall.
Coming in 4th was our Father and Son team from Russia Vladislav and Roman Ivanovski who took the 1st Family team title and first Ladies went to 6th overall ITA Letizia ANGELA TONOLI and Annalisa VICENTINI. 1st Juniors in 34th overall ITA 7544 Matteo Franciosi and Edoardo Porchera.
It goes without saying that there are a huge number or teams from around the World who have not been fortunate enough to make the trip to the 2021 RS Feva World Championships. To think what the turnout could have been without the issues of Covid simply blows our minds. This years RS Feva World Championships proves that the class is as buoyant as ever and this has to be a true testament to the sailors, families and, not ever to be underestimated the many coaches who help to train, support and nurture their sailors to be the incredible sports men and women we see on the racecourse.
Our thanks must go to the entire Travemünde Woche team especially Jens who has worked with the class since the planning started in the early Autumn of 2019 and Frans our class measurer who has been working away behind the scenes to make sure measurement checks are maintained throughout the event and the coaches who have ensured the spirit of the class has been heard and maintained.
Next year is a special 20th anniversary year for the RS Feva! The RS Feva World Championships will be part of the amazing RS Games taking place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, provisional dates are Registration 21st -22nd July, Championship Racing 23rd – 27th July
