Report from the 2017 Ladies World Champion Crew Eloise

We asked Eloise Clapson McBride to tell us about her experience at the RS Feva World Championships and how she and her helm Sian Talbot had prepared to become the 2017 RS Feva Ladies World Champions…..

The 2017 RS Feva World Championships in Medemblik Holland was amazing fun!  The venue was really well organised and close to our accommodation and the town, so we could ride everywhere by bike and meet up with friends after racing to go swimming etc.  Although it was a major competition of 177 boats from around the world, with lots of seriously talented sailors, it was still a friendly and exciting atmosphere – that’s one of the things I love about the RS Feva class.

The wind and weather over the championship was really varied – which made it an even competition as everyone had some weather that suited them best.  The Race Officials worked really hard at setting the courses in such shifting conditions!  There were a couple of long days on the water while we waited for the wind to fill in, or stop swinging directions.  For us it was most challenging on the Tuesday with very strong winds and waves.

I think preparing for the Worlds is an ongoing process; Sian and I were in the RYA UK Junior Squad for the 2016/17 season and so we trained all winter with our coach Tim Rush – who is brilliant!  I think taking on-board the information given to us in the briefings and putting the classroom sessions into practice on the water made a huge difference to our sailing this year.   We also worked on improving our fitness so that we could hike hard for longer when we needed to.  That really helped on the Tuesday at the Worlds!

It was an amazing experience winning the Ladies title at the World Championships – standing on the podium holding the trophy with Sian felt unreal, as a year ago we really didn’t think we’d even be close to winning!
